WIMBLEDON 29  TWICKENHAM 11

A sterling display by the Twickenham pack was not sufficient to make up for a lacklustre display by the backs and T’s were dumped out of the Powergen Intermediate Cup by a superior Wimbledon side.

Playing with the wind in their favour Wimbledon always looked menacing as they ran the ball at every opportunity. After an early exchange of penalties, T’s were called upon to defend their line for most of the rest of the first half. Wimbledon took advantage of every chance that came their way and ran in three tries, two converted and T’s could only answer with a second Leon John penalty.

The 22-3deficit was not insurmountable with the conditions in their favour and the pack played extremely well, taking a lot of lineout ball and looking dangerous in the mauls. What chances they gave to the backs were mostly squandered and they scored but one try by scrum-half Andy Rogers. Wimbledon themselves got a further goal for a final 29-11 score line.

With two men serving a 10-minute ban, T’s disciplinary record this season is beginning to look very poor. Greater self-control and the return of a little sparkle in the backs should see them winning again. They get the chance next week when they return to League action at home to bottom club Romford and Gidea Park.
