St.Albans 7 – Twickenham 21.
Twickenham
travelled to St. Albans in the knowledge that a loss what almost certainly mean
relegation. To their credit they rose to the occasion and were winners by a
fourteen point margin and in some style. Despite having three forwards yellow
carded they finished the first half six points in the lead and without
conceding any, by virtue of two Phil Astbury penalties.
At the start of the second half, and with Ts
having only thirteen men on the field St.Albans scored their only points, a
converted try. Shortly after T’s winger Russell Witham scored a try in the
corner which went unconverted. It was now the turn of St.Albans to have men sin
binned and indeed, when T’s James Clark beat fellow player Jimmy Peters to
ground the ball for their third try the St.Alban’s full back had the fabled red
mist descend on him and ran in from fifteen yards to try to land a haymaker on
a Twickenham player, mercifully missing, he received a red card, the try was
converted by PhilAstbury who went on to cap a good game with a nicely taken
drop goal.
This
was a creditable performance by Twickenham, now with a settled side and the
forwards and backs beginning to work in unison. However the was just the first
of two games that they need to win to feel safer from relegation, the next
being the home game against Suffolk side Hadleigh in two weeks time but on this
performance they will be very competitive.
