Twickenham
faced second placed Shelford from Cambridgeshire at home and as is their usual
practice started strongly keeping Shelford from scoring for the first twenty
minutes, when they conceded a penalty which Shelford duly slotted over, to be
followed by another not long after. Ts then produced a fine passage of play
culminating in a driving maul near the Shelford line with Chris Tytherleigh
scoring a try, unfortunately not converted. With the score 5-6 at half time and
Ts with the wind and slope in their favour all looked set for them to press
home the advantage and take the two points. However it was not to be, and as
has happened in previous games, the period just after the break proved
disastrous for Twickenham and they conceded a fairly soft try when the Shelford
centre found enough space to run through and score under the posts which was
converted.
Ts
then lost scrum half Jimmy Peters and prop Dave Thomas to injuries before James
Clark scored a penalty to bring the scores to 8-16.
Although
Twickenham finished well, despite losing star number eight, Rob Kirby with a
cracked rib, nothing they tried could bring any additional points and small
errors let scoring chances pass them by. They finish the first round of league
games next week with a trip to Hadleigh in Suffolk which could be a crucial
game as far as their league position is concerned.
