Letchworth 18- Twickenham 18
Twickenham
gained a valuable point in their battle against relegation on Saturday against Letchworth,
but if only they could have played the whole eighty minutes as they did for the
first twenty and the last twenty, the outright win would have been theirs.
Ts
scored their first try after only five minutes when the forwards turned over
Letchworth possession, fed the ball to Phil Astbury who scored under the post
for John Bradford to convert. Only five minutes later a nice blindside break by
scrum half Andy Rogers and a quick feed to Russell Witham saw the winger go
over for T’s second try, shortly followed by a John Bradford penalty gave
Twickenham a fifteen point lead.
At
this point Ts suddenly went off the boil, lost concentration and allowed
Letchworth back in the game, leaking a penalty and a converted try, but more
importantly ceding the initiative to the home side. Another Bradford penalty
left the half time score at 10 –18.
Letchworth
produced most of the pressure at the start of the second period and had
Twickenham very much on the back foot and looking likely to lose, especially
when they conceded a penalty followed shortly by another try bringing the
scores level. At that point Ts seemed to come alive again and with fresh legs
from the substitutes again started to perform as they had at the start and
finished the game the more impressive of the two sides but were unable to
convert they pressure into points and the tied game was perhaps the fairest
result.
