TWICKENHAM 43 CHESHUNT 0 Twickenham gave their supporters a welcome Christmas present with this comprehensive win over the bottom club in London 2 North League. Tries came at regular intervals through the match, four in the first half against the wind, but only three in the second with the wind in T’s favour. Things began when centre Clinton Banks kicked ahead, winger Leona John took the ball on and flanker Bobby Wallis scored in the corner. The second try involved a break from flanker Douggie Stewart, a run again with the ball by Leon John and a score for prop Richard Moses. Neither was converted in the difficult wind but the next try , a solo effort from Bobby Wallis, was under the posts and fly-half James Clark put the conversion kick between the uprights. The final try came when Rob Drinkwater, normally a flanker but nobly playing as hooker as T’s had no regular available, made a great break and let Leon John in to score the try for a 22-0 interval lead. Despite the scoreline Cheshunt, benefiting from the conditions, had put up a brave fight and threatened to score on a couple of occasions. In the second half, however, they rarely got out of their own 22. T’s tried everything, including a number of sparkling runs by 20 year-old wing Steve McDermott in his first game for the senior side. But they were thwarted by brave defence and only managed 3 tries. The first gave Bobby Wallis his hat-trick, a well deserved reward for a centre who was playing as flanker who had an outstanding game and was man-of-the match. He may have a job to persuade the coach to allow him to go back to his regular position. Clark converted. The last two tries went to the half-backs, Jim Peters and James Clark, and sub Greg Bryce converted both for the final 43-0 victory.
