Cambridge 39 – Twickenham 12
Twickenham kicked off with a bitter east wind at their backs, recovered the ball and attacked deep into the Cambridge 22 metre zone. Then a turnover allowed Cambridge to counter attack and establish themselves in T’s 22 area. Where after 5minutes a series of powerful attacks coupled with some skillful recycling allowed Cambridge to cross for a try wide on the left. From the restart Cambridge moved the ball rapidly back into T’s 22 where after a further 2 minutes from a scrum they were able to engineer an overlap on the left for another try. 10 – 0. This pattern was to repeat itself for the majority of the first half resulting in a penalty, a try and a try & conversion. Thirty-four points without response. Just before half time T’s forwards put together one of their effective rolling maul ploys and See touched down to the left of the Cambridge posts. Francis converted. Half time 34 – 7. In the second half Twickenham sorted out their defensive weaknesses and nullified the strong Cambridge back play by denying them the ball for long periods. But after 20 minutes the ball was swiftly moved to the strong Cambridge right wing who was held up just short of the line by some desperate defense. However the arrival of two of his colleagues was sufficient to drive him over for a try in the corner. The game continued fairly even until late in the 2nd half T’s WMD, the rolling maul, produced a try for Dawes, unfortunately the kick was missed. Second half honors even at 5 points each, final score Cambridge 39 Twickenham 12. Next league fixture Sat 27th Feb Thurrock at home.
