TWICKENHAM 12 BANK OF ENGLAND 32

Buoyed up, no doubt by their win against Cambridge in London 2 North last week, Bank of England proved to have the measure of Twickenham in a match characterised by determination rather than inspiration.

Bank opened the scoring after five minutes with a converted try and continued to threaten T¹s line, although clearances by captain James Clark kept Twickenham¹s hopes alive, until Bank¹s full back broke through patchy defence to claim a try which was unconverted.

In an attempt to redress the balance, winger Jon Taylor led a charge by Ts up to Bank¹s line but neither backs nor forwards could penetrate. An opportunity came when Ts were awarded a penalty close to the posts but failed in the kick and the game returned to hard, grinding play as Bank moved back into T¹s half where a penalty taken by the opposition fly half extended the score.

Twickenham then entered a promising phase, piling on the pressure close to Bank¹s line where they camped while scrums, mauls and individual breaks tried to crack a strong defence. Eventually Charlie l¹Anson took the ball from a line out to put T¹s first five points on the board.

Retribution was swift. Bank replied immediately with a try under T¹s posts which was easily converted. Then, in what was one of the livelier passages in the game, play returned deep into Bank territory. A pass from outside centre Joe Foley saw Jon Taylor well placed to cross the line, but for a high tackle. A penalty try was awarded and the conversion successfully taken by Clark, to bring Ts within 10 points of the visitors.

This was as close are they were to get however. A penalty infringement cost them three points and later a converted try from Bank closed the game at 12 32.
