Chingford
54 – Twickenham 20.
With so many of their backs not available Twickenham
had only had one realistic option, and that was to play ten man rugby and this
they did with some success with their forwards putting in a massive performance
and totally dominating the Chingford pack. By playing in this style, and with
the wind behind them they were leading 14-15 at half time, having scored tries
through Charlie I,anson and Ben Isherwood.
After the break it was a different story. Chingford
using the stiff breeze to good effect kept Ts pinned in their half for long
periods of play and despite the efforts of the Twickenham pack started to score
ties seemingly at will. The Chingford centres, brothers who had both
represented England at U19 level carved huge holes in the T’s defence, and with
a succession of missed touches weak tackling and poor positioning there was no doubt what the final outcome
was likely to be and for the second time this season Twickenham conceded 50
points.
Special mention must be made of Rob Kirby and Charlie
I’anson who took short ball after short ball and put their bodies on the line
time after time setting up a succession of punishing rucks which was the main
source of Twickenham’s possession.
The team will be thankful that next week there is no
league game which will give them time to lick their wounds and prepare for
their next league game, against another tough Essex side, Thurrock, the week
after.
